Three enjoyable adventures
This volume contains three books from quite early in Herges career. The Black Island has been revised and redrawn very beautifully from real-life locations around Britain. It is one of the best of the early books. Its a shame The Broken Ear was never reworked in the same way - the artwork is rather crude in comparison, often with little background detail, and although the adventure starts well, it seems to get lost towards the end and I found the "Arumbaya" episode rather tedious. However, this is made up for by the superb The Black Island and the equally fine book that followed it, King Ottokars sceptre. For me, these two books mark the beginning of the golden age of Tintin.

Three of the best
I love all 3 of these adventures, and always have. The Secret of the Unicorn is one of the very best of all the Tintin books. It does seem a little strange to include it in this volume without its sequel, Red Rackhams treasure (I suspect this is to encourage you to buy Volume 4!) All 3 adventures are classic Tintin, with suberb illustrations, exotic locations and exciting storylines. The colouful Captain Haddock is a very welcome addition to the cast. This collection is a real joy.

Timeless Classics
I adored Tintin as a child and recently rediscovered the books in a new light. They never lose their appeal. If you enjoy Tintin you should check out The Greatest Adventures of Spike and Suzy.
